James Campbell - Lighting Design
I began my interest in Television as a career when I was a student at Glasgow University between 1977 and 1982. I joined GUST, the Student Television Unit which is still going strong. Once a week we made a magazine programme for the internal TV network. I also widened my interest in photography by working for the student newspaper and other student bodies.
After graduating in 1981, I joined the BBC as a Vision Engineer at BBC Scotland's base in Glasgow. This gave me a good grounding in picture making both in studios and on location.
In 1985 I moved to a staff position in the Lighting Department at BBC Television Centre, first as a Lighting Vision Assistant then Vision Supervisor, becoming a staff Lighting Director in 1992. I gained experience on all types of shows in studios and on location.
In 2002 I went freelance and now work for many other companies as well as the BBC. I have also worked in the USA and Middle East.
